22 June 2011 Adolescent sexuality influenced more by parents than peers by George Atkinson
In a surprising Canadian study, parents emerged as the main sexuality role models for teenagers, with celebrities having the least influence of all. The study, presented at the Canadian Pediatric Society's 88th Annual Conference, found that 45 percent of adolescents consider their parents to be their sexuality role model. Surprisingly, only 32 percent looked to their peers and just 15 percent took inspiration from celebrities. The survey involved 1,139 mothers of teenagers and 1,171 youths between 14 and 17 years of age. Interestingly, 78 percent of the mothers who participated in the survey believed that their children modeled their friends' sexual behaviour. "Parents seem to underestimate their role and the impact that they have," researcher Dr. Jean-Yves Frappier noted. "Health professionals and the media have an important role to play in empowering parents and enabling them to increase their communications with their children with regards to sexual health issues."
The study touched on topics such as sources of sexual health information, communication about sexual health, family functioning and sexual activities.
